For many of us, a vehicle is a necessity.

We need it to get around ‒ to get to school, to work, to appointments and to run errands.

And although there are not many things more freeing than being out on the open road listening to our favorite tunes…

Cars can also be a pretty big burden.

Pricey insurance, unexpected roadside assistance calls and ever-rising gas prices is enough for anyone to consider hanging up their car keys and buying a bus pass. But for many of us, owning a car is just a normal part of life.

But for many of us, owning a car is just a normal part of life.

However, just because we need gas, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be looking for ways to cut our gas costs, or at least be rewarded for it.

While many gas stations have loyalty programs or ways to save a few cents per liter, there are some credit cards that will allow you to earn some major rewards on top of that as well.

So, let’s break down some of the top credit cards on the market so you can maximize your return on spending each time you have to stop to fill up at the pumps.

Our pick for the best gas credit card in Canada

For us, the clear winner is the .

This cash back credit card will give you an above-average 4% return on all your gas purchases – with no caps or tiers, plus:

  • 10% cash back on all purchases for the first 3 months (up to $2,000 spent), and then
  • 4% cash back on groceries,
  • 2% on drugstore purchases and recurring bills, and…
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Sure, 1% cash back is passable for a card with $99 annual fee. But if gas (and groceries) puts a dent in your budget, then having this card in your wallet could pay off. Plus, for a limited time Scotia is waiving the annual fee for this card for the first year free.

What’s more? It comes with a solid insurance package, for a cash back card, and includes perks that are exclusive to Visa Infinite credit cards:

  • Visa Infinite Dining Series,
  • Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection, and
  • Visa Infinite Complimentary Concierge.

Plus, with MBNA recently announcing changes to their much loved Rewards World Elite Mastercard, it looks like the Momentum Visa Infinite is going to be taking over the spot for best cash back card in Canada.

Other credit cards that give you 4% back on gas purchases

The Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite is not the only credit card in Canada right now that will give you 4% back on your gas purchases.

The second card on our list is another card from Scotiabank – the .

In fact, on the surface, this card is even better than the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite.

This card beats out the above card in the following 4 categories:

  • Sign-up Bonus: Unlike the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite, you’ll get 12,000 Scotia Rewards points as long as you charge $750 to your card in the first 3 months.
  • Rewards Earned: The Scotiabank Gold Amex will give you 4 Scotia Rewards points not just on gas purchases, but also on groceries, at restaurants and on entertainment.
  • Insurance: Travel credit cards often come with better insurance packages than cash back cards, and this card is no different. You’re covered with 12 different types of insurance (compared to the Momentum’s 9 types) and will even cover you for 10 days of travel if you are over the age of 65 – a pretty rare benefit.
  • Income Requirements: Another nice thing about the Gold Amex from Scotiabank is that it doesn’t come with a steep income requirement like many other premium travel credit cards. So, if you’re not making 60K+ a year, this card would be a great option.

The catch? Amex cards are not as widely accepted.

But if you pair it with a no fee Mastercard, then you could potentially maximize your rewards.

Another option, if you’re looking for 4% back on your gas purchases is the .

Like the Momentum Visa Infinite card, this card requires a 60K personal income and has a $99 annual fee which is waived for this first year.

With the Dividend Visa Infinite, cardholders are given:

  • 4% cash back on gas and groceries,
  • 2% cash back on Tim Hortons and TELUS purchases, and
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Where this card doesn’t stack up, however, is that there is a cap on the amount of rewards you can earn at 2% and 4%.

Anything charged to your card over $80K annually will only earn 1% cash back. So, if you are a big spender, this card is not the card for you.

Our pick for best no fee cash back gas credit card

If you’re looking for a gas credit card that has no annual fee, the is first that comes to mind.

Not only will it give you up to 2% cash back, but it will allow you to choose 2 (or 3) categories you want to earn your 2% in.

Also, feel free to change your categories as your spending habits change. You get to be in the driver’s seat.

Pssst. You can have the bonus third category, if you have your Money-Back rewards deposited into a Tangerine Savings account.

Which categories would you choose?

  • Grocery
  • Furniture
  • Restaurants
  • Hotel-Motel
  • Gas
  • Recurring Bill Payments
  • Drug Store
  • Home Improvement
  • Entertainment
  • Public Transportation and Parking

Keep in mind: Any purchases you make outside of your spending categories will only earn you 0.5% cash back, no limit or cap on the amount of cash back you can earn.

It also comes with purchase insurance, a promotional balance transfer interest rate of only 1.95% for 6 months ‒ and the flexibility to change your spending categories if the ones you pick aren’t working for you.

Plus, because this card is a Mastercard, acceptance shouldn’t be an issue. So, even if you get your gas at Costco, this card has your covered.

Our pick for best no fee travel gas credit card

If you prefer to collect travel rewards over cash back, then consider the . You’ll earn 2 points per dollar spent, which equates to the same 2% return on your gas spend, but will be able to apply those rewards to travel purchases.

What’s more, you’ll also gain 2 points per dollar spent on the following categories, up to $5,000 per year in annual spend:

  • Groceries, and
  • Restaurants.

All while still earning 1 point on all of your other purchases. You’ll even get up to a 5,000 point sign up bonus worth $50.

And even though this is a no fee card, it still includes seven different type of insurance, including travel accident (up to $1,000,000 coverage), trip interruption and rental car damage and theft. Not bad for a no annual fee card.
