Best credit card in Canada, up to 30,000 bonus points

The best credit card in Canada, the American Express Cobalt Card, graces our list with its outstanding 30K welcome bonus. All you have to do to receive it is spend at least $500 per month for 12 months.

Considering the average family of 4 in Canada will spend around $1,000 per month on groceries alone in 2019, this welcome bonus is as good as earned.

On top of that, you’ll get:

  • 5 points per $1 spent on grocery and restaurant purchases.
  • 2 points per $1 spent on gas and travel purchases (including daily transit), and
  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.

All for a super-manageable $10 monthly fee.

And with a multitude of ways to use your Membership Rewards points, you’ll be earning high value, flexible rewards that can be used for almost anything.

0% interest on balance transfers for 10 months, best offer in Canada

If you’re still struggling to pay off some of that high-interest Christmas shopping debt, the best balance transfer offer in Canada is here to save the day (and your credit score!)

The MBNA True Line Mastercard is offering a 0% balance transfer promo rate for 10 months.

And unlike many balance transfer offers out there, once the promotional period is over, you can still take advantage of a permanently low 12.99% purchase interest rate rather than have the interest shoot back up to 19.99% or more.

Coming soon: best in class multipliers and no foreign transaction fees

Though this card has already been a fan favourite for its super-flexible rewards and 4x high earn rates, it’s about to get even better. And no, this time it’s not an April Fool’s joke.

Coming August 1, 2019, the Scotiabank Gold American Express will no longer be charging foreign exchange fees in addition to its long list of other perks. Add to that its 15K welcome bonus, and you’ve got yourself the card of the summer.

Although it’s getting some improvements, there are a few downsides.

Some of the insurance coverage, most notably travel insurance for people over 65, will be taking a hit for the team. Its annual fee will also be increased by $21, from $99 to $120.

All the more reason to get it now, save on the increased fee in your first year, and perhaps take advantage of the extra insurance coverage while it lasts.

30,000 bonus Aeroplan miles and the first year free

One of our top Aeroplan credit cards, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, has a truly outstanding deal right now set to end on June 2nd.

As part of signing up, you’ll earn up to 30,000 Aeroplan miles – 15,000 after your first purchase, and another 15,000 after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months. That’s worth 1 round trip flight within Canada and the Continental U.S. with some miles to spare.

On top of that, you’ll earn miles on all of your day-to-day purchases:

  • 1.5 miles per $1 spent on gas, groceries, drugstores, and purchases, and
  • 1 mile per $1 spent on everything else.

And when you redeem your miles for flights, you’ll get great benefits on Air Canada operated flights like priority check-in and first free checked bag.

60,000 points and a free night stay every year

Getting free flights is great, but what happens once you get to your destination? Wouldn’t it be nice to save on your hotel bill as well?

That’s where the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card comes in.

To get you started, you’ll earn a welcome bonus of up to 60,000 points when you spend $1,500 in the first 3 months. That’s enough points for 2 free nights at a category 4 hotel.

And here’s what you’ll earn on all of your purchases:

  • 5 points per $1 spent at Marriott properties, and
  • 2 points per $1 spent on all other purchases.

Your Marriott Bonvoy points will get you staying at Marriott hotels for free in no time. And with over 6,700 properties worldwide, it shouldn’t be hard to find a place to stay no matter where you travel.

The card comes with these great Marriott Bonvoy perks as well:

  • free night stay every year on your cards anniversary, worth up to 35,000 points,
  • automatic Silver Elite status,
  • Gold Elite status after spending $30,000 annually, and
  • 15 Elite Night credits every year.

That free night every year is enough to pay for the $120 annual fee and likely quite a bit more depending on the hotel you choose for your free night. On top of all that, the Silver Elite status makes your stays even better by giving you bonus points and priority check-in.
